Milwaukee Artist Restores Paintings Damaged in U-Haul Fire, Seeks Community Support
A Milwaukee artist, Jesus Avila, is undertaking the painstaking restoration of approximately 30 large paintings damaged in a January fire at a U-Haul storage facility in Milwaukee’s Walker’s Point neighborhood. The paintings, representing 11 years of work, are a tribute to the United States and its history.
Fire Damage and Restoration Efforts
While Avila’s storage unit itself did not burn in the fire, the paintings sustained significant water damage and tearing. He estimates spending 8 to 10 hours a day on the restoration process and plans to enlist help to expedite the work. Avila reached out to TMJ4 News following the incident to share his story.
A Tribute to the United States
Avila, who immigrated from Mexico to Madison, Wisconsin, as a child, created the series of paintings as a way to express his gratitude to the United States. Having run a Mexican folk dance company for over 50 years, he traveled extensively and developed a deep appreciation for the country’s history and diverse character. “The one thing that I always wanted to do is give back to this country, due to the fact that the United States gave me and my family so many opportunities,” Avila said. He describes the paintings as “poetry on canvas.”
Community Support Through GoFundMe
To help fund the extensive restoration efforts, Avila has launched a GoFundMe campaign. Those interested in supporting his work can contribute through the online fundraiser. Additional donation options, including Cash App and Venmo, are available through his Linktree page.
Additional Family Hardship
Avila is also seeking support for his family, who are currently facing homelessness. A separate GoFundMe campaign is dedicated to helping his family of five and their dog, Jasper, locate a new home. More information can be found on his Linktree page.
