Saharan Dust to Blanket Germany This Weekend, Turning Skies Milky
Germany is bracing for another wave of Saharan dust this weekend, with the phenomenon expected to create hazy conditions and a milky appearance to the sun. While the dust is largely concentrated in the upper atmosphere, it will be noticeable across the country, particularly from Friday through Sunday.
Dusty Arrival: A Weekend Forecast
The first significant plumes of dust began arriving in western and southern Germany on Friday, March 6th, 2026, with the Oberrhein region experiencing the highest concentrations. By Saturday, the dust cloud is predicted to shift towards the northwest and northern parts of Germany, spreading more evenly across the country by Sunday.
Minimal Impact on Ground Level
Fortunately, the highest concentrations of dust are expected to remain in the upper atmosphere. This means that relatively little dust will reach ground level. The lack of rainfall will prevent the dust from being washed out, meaning spring cleaning won’t be unduly affected.
What to Expect: A Milky Sun
Despite the warm temperatures – reaching up to 19-20 degrees Celsius on Saturday and Sunday – the Saharan dust will impact visibility. Jacqueline Kernn of the German Weather Service (DWD) in Offenbach notes that the sun may appear “milky or hazy” throughout the weekend. This is due to the dust particles scattering sunlight, creating a diffused glow.
Saharan Dust: A Common Occurrence
The transport of Saharan dust to Europe is a regular phenomenon, with dust typically traveling over 2,000 kilometers through the air.
In March 2025, similar dust events were observed in North Rhine-Westphalia, causing the sunlight to appear warmer and milky.
