Celebrating Athletic Excellence: Morgan State University Announces Hall of Fame Class of 2025

Baltimore, MD – Morgan State University is proud to unveil its incoming class for the Varsity “M” Letterwinners Club Athletic Hall of Fame, recognizing a distinguished group of individuals and teams who have shaped the universityS rich athletic tradition. The Class of 2025 comprises seven outstanding athletes and two historically impactful teams,each embodying dedication,resilience,and exceptional skill. These inductees will take their place among the legends who have graced the fields and courts of Morgan State.

A Legacy of Achievement

This year’s selection represents a diverse range of sports and eras, highlighting the consistent pursuit of excellence within Morgan State Athletics. currently, Morgan State University competes in the MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) and boasts 15 intercollegiate varsity sports, wiht over 350 student-athletes participating annually. The Hall of fame induction serves as a powerful reminder of the foundation upon which current successes are built.

Honoring Individual Brilliance

The distinguished athletes selected for induction are:

Ivy Bush-Lawrence (Volleyball, 2006-09): A dominant force on the volleyball court, Bush-Lawrence consistently ranked among the league leaders in kills and blocks during her tenure.
Maurice Burton (Football, 1976-79): Burton was a standout defensive player during a pivotal era for Morgan State football, known for his tenacity and leadership.
Clarence Holzendorf (football, 1977-80): Holzendorf’s contributions to the football programme were marked by exceptional athleticism and a commitment to team success.
Esther Johnson Smith (volleyball, 2004-07): Johnson Smith’s powerful hitting and defensive prowess made her a cornerstone of the volleyball team’s success.
Alan Mitchell (Track & Field, 2003-06): Mitchell excelled in multiple track and field events, consistently achieving personal bests and representing Morgan State with distinction.
Courtney Servary (Lacrosse, 1972-1975): Servary was a key player during the early years of Morgan State’s lacrosse program, demonstrating skill and dedication.
James Turk (Basketball,1961-1965): Turk’s scoring ability and all-around game made him a standout performer for the Morgan State basketball team.

Recognizing Team Triumphs

in addition to the individual inductees, the Hall of Fame Committee will bestow the Team of Distinction Award upon two remarkable squads:

Swimming and Diving Championship Teams (1952-75): This era marked a period of sustained dominance for Morgan State’s swimming and diving program, with numerous conference championships and individual accolades.
* 1950 Men’s 4x400m Relay Team (Sam LaBeach, Bob Tyler, Bill Brown, George Rhoden): This team achieved national recognition with their impressive performance, setting a standard for future relay teams.

The Varsity “M” Letterwinners Club Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held on Friday, September 19, 2025, at the Marriott Owings Mill Metro center in Owings Mills.
