Sidney Crosby’s Olympic Status Remains Uncertain After Injury in Quarterfinal Win
Milan, Italy – Sidney Crosby’s availability for Team Canada’s semifinal matchup against Finland at the 2026 Winter Olympics remains unclear after sustaining a lower-body injury during Wednesday’s 4-3 overtime victory against Czechia. The injury occurred during the second period of the quarterfinal game at Santagiulia Arena.
Injury Details
Crosby was initially injured after a hit from Czech defenseman Radko Gudas at 4:55 of the second period. He initially remained in the game but was then hit again by Martin Necas and Gudas thirteen seconds later, forcing him to depart the game with 13:55 remaining in the period. He was examined by Team Canada’s medical staff before heading to the dressing room.
“You just rarely witness it, so for him something definitely went wrong,” said Canada coach Jon Cooper, as reported by NHL.com.
Team Response and Captain’s Influence
Despite the injury, Crosby addressed the team during the second intermission. “We didn’t seek this to be Sid’s last game at this Olympics,” Cooper stated. “It was a massive motivator for the guys coming out.” Nathan MacKinnon scored a power-play goal shortly after Crosby’s departure, with Macklin Celebrini taking Crosby’s spot on the first power-play unit and recording an assist.
Current Status and Future Outlook
As of Thursday, February 19, 2026, Crosby has not been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament. Coach Cooper told reporters that Crosby was scheduled to undergo an MRI to determine the severity of the injury. Sportsnet reports Cooper stated, “Sid is by no means ruled out of the tournament. We’ve got the best of the best looking at him.”
Cooper added that the team will take a day-by-day approach and will not risk Crosby’s health. A further update on his status is expected within 24 hours. Times of India also reported on Cooper’s cautious optimism.
