Pit Bull Puppy Shot in Harrisburg Recovering, Attorney General Investigates
A 10-month-vintage pit bull puppy, named Lux, is recovering with a foster family after being shot in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on March 10, 2026. The Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office is investigating the incident.
According to Pitties Love Peace, a nonprofit dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of pit bull and bully breed dogs, a local emergency room contacted the organization for support with Lux, who had sustained a gunshot wound. The bullet entered her shoulder and exited through her back, causing irreparable damage to her leg.
“The bullet entered her shoulder and exited through her back, causing irreparable damage. She’ll be heading into surgery shortly to have the damaged leg amputated,” Pitties Love Peace stated on March 11.
The emergency room indicated that Lux’s options were limited to rescue by an organization like Pitties Love Peace or humane euthanasia. Pitties Love Peace initiated a fundraiser to cover the estimated $6,400-$7,400 in medical expenses.
Investigation and Allegations
A Harrisburg Magisterial District Judge, Hanif Johnson, has been identified as the individual who allegedly shot the dog, claiming self-defense. Dauphin County District Attorney Francis Chardo recused himself from the case due to potential conflicts of interest, as his attorneys frequently appear before Judge Johnson. The investigation has been referred to the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General.
“I received information from the police about the shooting of the puppy and the self-defense assertion,” Chardo said. “I immediately determined that I would not make an assessment of the case… I invoked a conflict and immediately referred the investigation to the Office of Attorney General. That office will investigate and make the determination.”
Lux’s Recovery and Future
On March 12, Pitties Love Peace announced on Facebook that Lux’s surgery was successful and she was beginning her recovery in a foster home. Lux is now adapting to life with three legs.
As of March 26, 2026, no charges have been filed in connection with the shooting, according to PennLive. Lux is expected to be available for adoption at the end of April.
This is a developing story.
