8GB vs 16GB VRAM: How Much Do You Really Need?

We compared two Radeon RX 9600 XT graphics cards from Gigabyte. they were the same except one had 8 GB of VRAM and the other had 16 GB. We wanted to see how much difference this made in games.

For the last six months, we’ve said that 8 GB of VRAM isn’t enough for graphics cards in 2025. But manufacturers weren’t able to send us an 8 GB model to test. ThatS now changed. Nvidia didn’t send 8 GB cards for testing at all,and manufacturers had to get them themselves. AMD is more willing to provide 8 GB cards. After trying for several months,we got the Radeon RX 9600 XT 8 GB and compared it directly to the 16 GB model.

Remember, these results are only for comparing the 8 GB and 16 GB versions of the RX 9600 XT. We didn’t change anything else. You can’t assume these results will be the same for the RTX 5060 Ti 16 GB and 8 GB. The card’s performance, memory speed, and bus all affect the results.

GeForce cards with 8 GB VRAM have one small benefit: faster memory speeds thanks to GDDR7. 8 GB Radeon cards use GDDR6, which is slower at moving data in memory. But GeForce cards have another, possibly bigger problem: the pcie 5.0 bus is limited to eight lines. This can affect how much data is transferred, and it’s complicated.

We’ve talked about this before and done some testing. With 8 GB GeForce cards, performance depends on the speed of the PCIe bus, the specific game, and what’s happening in the game.
