Tragedy in Dungannon: 2-Year-Old Girl Murdered, Partner Sentenced to Life
A 35-year-old man, Darryn John Armstrong, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his sometime partner’s two-year-old daughter, Ali Jayden Doyle. The tragic incident occurred in August 2021 at a house in Dungannon, Northern Ireland.
A Life Cut Short
Ali Jayden Doyle tragically died from a severe head injury sustained in the incident. Armstrong initially attempted to blame the child’s one-year-old brother, claiming he had thrown a plastic toy that caused Ali Jayden to fall against a fireplace. However, he later confessed to picking up Ali Jayden and throwing her, resulting in her fatal injury.
Armstrong admitted to being under the influence of cannabis at the time and stated that he was feeling frustrated and lost his temper.
Justice Served, Remorse Absent
During sentencing at Belfast Crown Court, Mr. Justice McAlinden emphasized Armstrong’s lack of remorse or regret for the “brutal murder” of Ali Jayden. Despite the gravity of his crime, Armstrong received a minimum sentence of 20 years.
Mr. Justice McAlinden stated that Armstrong’s time spent on remand will be considered when determining his eligibility for parole.
Mother Faces Probation Order
Ali Jayden’s mother, Jade Dempsey, was sentenced to a three-year Probation Order for wilfully neglecting and exposing her daughter in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering or injury. Dempsey was not present at the time of Ali Jayden’s death, as she was planning to purchase a double-buggy in Belfast. She had left her children in Armstrong’s care, despite a Child Protection Plan prohibiting Armstrong from having contact with them.
This tragic case highlights the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the importance of protecting vulnerable children.
