Kioxia Unveils Value-Oriented QLC-Based EG7 Series SSDs for PC OEMs

Kioxia has introduced its new EG7 Series solid state drives, a value-oriented storage solution designed specifically for PC original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Announced in April 2026, the EG7 Series represents Kioxia’s first client SSD to feature its eighth-generation BiCS FLASH™ quadruple-level cell (QLC) 3D flash memory technology. The drives aim to deliver a balance of performance, power efficiency and affordability for mainstream computing workloads in laptops, and desktops.

Technical Specifications and Performance

The EG7 Series SSDs utilize a DRAM-less design that relies on host memory buffer (HMB) technology, eliminating the need for separate DRAM chips to reduce costs and power consumption. Built on Kioxia’s 218-layer BiCS FLASH generation 8 QLC NAND, the drives are available in M.2 2230, 2242, and 2280 form factors with capacities of 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB.

Performance specifications include sequential read speeds of up to 7,000 MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 6,200 MB/s. The drives likewise deliver up to 1,000,000 IOPS for 4K random read and write operations. As PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs, they are designed to function within the bandwidth constraints of the interface, where the theoretical maximum for four lanes is approximately 7.88 GB/s.

Target Use Cases and Market Positioning

Kioxia positions the EG7 Series for value-oriented slim laptops, commercial and consumer notebooks, and desktop systems. The company emphasizes that the drives provide a cost-effective storage option without compromising on user experience for everyday computing tasks. By leveraging QLC technology—which stores four bits of data per memory cell—the EG7 Series achieves higher storage density at a lower cost per gigabyte compared to triple-level cell (TLC) alternatives, while maintaining performance levels suitable for mainstream applications.

The launch follows Kioxia’s earlier Exceria G3 SSD series and comes amid ongoing pressure on PC hardware pricing. Kioxia states that the EG7 Series enables OEMs to manage system costs while still offering responsive storage performance. The drives also feature Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) support compliant with TCG Opal v2.02 for enhanced data security.

Industry Context and Availability

According to Kioxia, the EG7 Series SSDs are currently in the sampling phase with select PC OEM customers, with general availability expected to begin in the second quarter of 2026. The company highlights that the drives expand access to high-performance, power-efficient storage across a broader range of systems at a more accessible price point, particularly benefiting budget-conscious PC designs where storage costs have historically been a barrier to performance.
