Nomádico: Mexican Rock Band Blends History, Philosophy and Powerful Sound

From the Mexican underground, Nomádico delivers a potent blend of classic rock and grunge, exploring themes of human history and conflict through a poetic lens. The trio, formed in 2016, is comprised of Rogelio Mondragón Reyes (vocals/guitar), Arturo Tapia (drums), and Francisco Portilla (bass).

A Conceptual Journey Through Human History

Nomádico’s debut album, self-titled Nomádico, is a conceptual work tracing the human journey from its origins in Africa to the complexities of the present day. Songs like “Camino,” “Adiós Ethiopia,” and “Esclavista” delve into our roots and struggles with lyrical depth. According to Rogelio Mondragón, the band aims to move beyond superficiality, offering “passion, history and a conviction to always move forward.”

Exploring the “Battle of the Gods”

The band is currently preparing to release their second full-length album, which Mondragón describes as centered around the concept of “the battle of the gods.” This forthcoming work will approach the history of human conflict through the lens of religious convictions, moving beyond a purely documentary perspective to create an epic soundscape.

From Chopo to Festivals: A Growing Following

Nomádico has cultivated a dedicated following through performances at venues like the Tianguis Cultural del Chopo, where they’ve connected with audiences spanning punk and metal subcultures. While receiving positive reception at festivals, the band acknowledges that some listeners may be hesitant to embrace styles outside the mainstream. Portilla noted that some audiences “lack musical culture to open themselves to rock and roll.”

Rock’s Enduring Spirit

Despite claims of rock’s decline, the members of Nomádico believe the genre remains vital. Tapia asserts that rock is “still valid” and evolving to foster unity, while emphasizing the importance of recognizing the unique value each band brings to the scene. He believes the genre is currently “lost due to musical overexposure.”

Diverse Influences, Unified Sound

The band members draw inspiration from a wide range of genres. Tapia cites thrash and death metal, while Portilla enjoys Britpop. Mondragón’s influences include blues, jazz, and classic rock, ultimately converging on the powerful sound of Led Zeppelin.

A Heavy Recent Album on the Horizon

Produced by Gerry Rosado (San Pacualito Rey, Javier Corcobado), Nomádico’s upcoming album promises a significant sonic and visual impact, ranging from existentialist lyrics to dynamic shifts in intensity. The song “Esclavista” exemplifies the introspective power the band aims to evoke in their listeners.

Supporting the Underground Rock Scene

Nomádico advocates for supporting the underground rock scene by encouraging bands to prioritize live performances over relying solely on digital platforms. They believe it’s crucial for audiences to engage with music that exists outside the mainstream.

Rogelio Mondragón Reyes: Academic and Musician

Rogelio Mondragón Reyes, the band’s vocalist and guitarist, holds a Licenciatura in Political Science and Public Administration from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He also earned a doctorate in Philosophy from UNAM and a master’s degree in Philosophy of the Social Sciences from The London School of Economics and Political Science. He is currently a professor and researcher at the Academia de Ciencia Política y Administración Urbana of the UACM.
