ByteDance’s Seedance 2.0 Faces Copyright Scrutiny from Hollywood
Beijing-based ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, is facing legal challenges from major Hollywood studios over its new artificial intelligence (AI) video generator, Seedance 2.0. The core issue revolves around allegations of widespread copyright infringement and unauthorized apply of celebrity likenesses.
Seedance 2.0: A New Era in AI Video Generation
Seedance 2.0 is an AI tool that allows users to create realistic videos from text, image, audio and video prompts. According to ByteDance, the tool utilizes a unified multimodal audio-video joint generation architecture, offering comprehensive content reference and editing capabilities. The launch of Seedance 2.0 has positioned China at the forefront of generative AI, particularly as development of similar products, like OpenAI’s Sora, appears to have slowed.
Hollywood’s Response: Cease-and-Desist Letters
The Motion Picture Association (MPA), representing studios including Netflix, Paramount Skydance, Sony, Universal, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Disney, has issued a strong statement demanding ByteDance cease “infringing activity.” The MPA alleges that Seedance 2.0 has engaged in unauthorized use of U.S. Copyrighted works on a massive scale.
Disney has taken direct action, sending a cease-and-desist letter accusing ByteDance of distributing and reproducing its intellectual property without permission. The letter alleges that Seedance 2.0 was “pre-packaged with a pirated library of copyrighted characters,” effectively treating them as public domain clip art. Paramount Skydance has also sent a similar cease-and-desist letter, echoing Disney’s accusations.
ByteDance’s Response and Future Safeguards
ByteDance has acknowledged the concerns and stated its commitment to protecting intellectual property rights. A company spokesperson announced that they are “taking steps to strengthen current safeguards” to prevent unauthorized use of intellectual property and likeness by users.
Disney’s Broader AI Strategy
Interestingly, while pursuing legal action against ByteDance, Disney has also entered into a licensing deal and investment with OpenAI. This agreement allows OpenAI to utilize Disney characters from Star Wars, Pixar, and Marvel franchises within its Sora video generator.
