Rhode Island Ice Rink Shooting: Two Killed, Suspect Dead in Targeted Attack

A shooting at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, on Monday afternoon left two people dead and three critically injured. The suspect, identified as Robert Dorgan, 56, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene, according to authorities. The shooting, which occurred during a high school hockey game, appears to have been a targeted act stemming from a family dispute.

Details of the Shooting

The Pawtucket Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at the arena around 2:30 p.m. On February 16, 2026. Police Chief Tina Goncalves stated that the incident involved a “family dispute” and that the suspect also used the name Roberta Esposito.

Three victims were hospitalized in critical condition as of Monday night. A Good Samaritan intervened during the shooting, attempting to subdue the suspect and potentially preventing further casualties, Chief Goncalves noted.

Suspect Identified

Robert Dorgan, the suspect, was identified as the father of a North Providence high school hockey player. According to reports, he shot multiple members of his own family. One of the deceased victims was reportedly Dorgan’s son.

Investigation and Response

The FBI and ATF responded to the scene to assist state and local law enforcement. FBI Director Kash Patel stated that the agency would provide necessary resources, but confirmed there was “no imminent threat to public safety.”

The Coventry School District confirmed that all students from the boys hockey team present at the arena were accounted for and safe. Mental health resources were made available to students and families.

Reaction and Support

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee expressed his prayers for Pawtucket and those involved. Local and national sports teams, including the Boston Bruins, Celtics, Red Sox, and New England Patriots, also released statements expressing their sympathy and support.

Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien described the incident as “traumatic,” noting the event occurred during a high school hockey game’s senior night.
