This limited-field Signature Event will feature 72 players, with a 36-hole cut leaving only the top 50 and ties, or those within 10 strokes of the lead, to compete on the weekend.

Riviera Country Club: A Test of Skill

Designed by George Thomas nearly 100 years ago, Riviera Country Club plays to a par 71 and measures over 7,300 yards. The course is renowned for its challenging holes, including the short par-4 10th, the par-3 6th with a bunker in the middle of the green, and the lengthy par-3 4th, now stretching to 273 yards. The Kikuyu grass fairways and rough provide a unique challenge, offering a good lie in the fairway but a sticky, difficult turf around the greens. Greens are Poa Annua, similar to those recently seen at Pebble Beach and Torrey Pines.

Success at Riviera demands a well-rounded game. The narrow fairways, numerous trees, elevation changes, and doglegs require precision off the tee. Greens in Regulation numbers are typically low, making scrambling a crucial skill. The course has historically favored players who also excel in pitching and chipping.

Correlated Courses and Championship Pedigree

Riviera has a strong correlation with other prestigious courses. In addition to Augusta National, the Plantation Course at Kapalua, and St. Andrews (the Classic Course) are often used as comparative benchmarks for player performance.

Notably, many champions at Riviera have also won major championships, particularly the Masters. Past winners who have triumphed at both Riviera and Augusta include Ben Hogan, Fred Couples, Nick Faldo, Adam Scott, Bubba Watson, Mike Weir, Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Hideki Matsuyama, Tom Watson, and Craig Stadler.

Expert Picks for the 2026 Genesis Invitational

Patrick Cantlay (33-1)

Hailing from Southern California and a UCLA alumnus, Patrick Cantlay has a strong track record at Riviera, with multiple top-5 finishes. He also performed well at Torrey Pines when it hosted the Genesis Invitational in 2025 due to wildfires. Cantlay has demonstrated consistent form, with recent top-15 finishes out west, including a 12th-place ranking in SG: Tee to Green at Pebble Beach.

Matt Fitzpatrick (35-1)

The Englishman was also in contention at Pebble Beach, ranking sixth in the field for SG: Tee to Green. He has a history of strong performances at Riviera, Kapalua, and St. Andrews, and has twice finished in the top 10 at the Masters. Over the last 24 rounds, Fitzpatrick ranks 15th in scrambling and is currently third on Tour in Greens in Regulation Percentage.

Sam Burns (42-1)

Sam Burns showcased his putting prowess on Poa Annua at Pebble Beach, ranking fifth in SG: Putting. He has previously finished in the top 10 and top 5 at Riviera and was eighth at Kapalua in 2025. Over the last 24 rounds, Burns ranks fourth in scrambling.

Min Woo Lee (48-1)

The young Australian nearly forced a playoff at Pebble Beach, demonstrating exceptional putting skills (second in SG: Putting). He is a strong ball-striker, currently ranking fourth on Tour in Total Driving. Lee has finished 21st at St. Andrews and 14th and 22nd at the Masters. Australians have historically performed well at Riviera, potentially due to their familiarity with Kikuyu grass.

Jason Day (70-1)

Jason Day, like Min Woo Lee, possesses a strong short game and familiarity with Kikuyu grass. He has finished ninth at Riviera in his last two appearances, with multiple top-10 finishes at Kapalua and the Masters, and a fourth-place finish at St. Andrews in 2015. He is a two-time champion at Torrey Pines and currently ranks 19th on Tour in Greens in Regulation Percentage, having finished runner-up at the American Express earlier in the 2026 season.
