Prue Leith Reflects on Bake Off Exit, Assisted Dying Advocacy, and 86th Birthday
Dame Prue Leith, the departing judge of The Great British Bake Off, has spoken candidly about her decision to leave the show after seven years, her passionate support for assisted dying legislation, and her recent 86th birthday celebration at London Fashion Week.
Leaving The Great British Bake Off
Leith announced her departure from the popular Channel 4 baking competition in January 2026, a decision she says followed two years of consideration. She explained to the Telegraph that she didn’t wish to “overstay her welcome,” comparing it to leaving a dinner party while still enjoying oneself. “I’ve never wanted to overstay my welcome in anything,” she stated. “Just like you don’t want to stay too long at a dinner party, I suppose it’s significant to leave while you’re happy and enjoying it and people aren’t fed up with you.”
Leith also revealed she has never actually watched an episode of The Great British Bake Off, preferring travel programs with her husband. She has publicly wished her replacement, Nigella Lawson, well, encouraging her to “enjoy it.” Nigella Lawson was confirmed as the novel judge on January 26, 2026.
Advocating for Assisted Dying
Beyond her television work, Leith has become a vocal advocate for assisted dying legislation, particularly following the “slow and agonising” death of her brother, David, from bone cancer. She believes that legalizing assisted dying would allow individuals facing terminal illnesses to die peacefully and with dignity.
“Had assisted dying been a legal option for him, he could have died peacefully, surrounded by love and support, with enough morphine to still the pain,” Leith shared with the Telegraph. “Instead, his family’s memories of his last days are of his trauma and suffering and their inability to help him.”
Leith criticized amendments made to the Terminally Ill Adults (Finish of Life) Bill, calling them “disgraceful and unprincipled.” Despite differing views within her family – her son, Danny Kruger, opposes the legislation – she emphasizes the importance of respectful dialogue. “We debate, but without getting angry about it,” she said. “We need to encourage a healthy exchange of views.”
Celebrating 86th Birthday at London Fashion Week
Leith celebrated her 86th birthday on Tuesday, February 18, 2026, with a surprise rendition of “Happy Birthday” following her runway appearance at London Fashion Week. She modeled for eco-designers Vin+Omi, wearing a unique ensemble crafted from holly, nettles, butterbur, wood clippings, and recycled aluminum, complete with an extravagant floral headpiece. Prue Leith’s successor, Nigella Lawson, was described as “wonderful” by Leith.
