London Marathon Runner Shares Harrowing Sepsis Story
Jennifer Gavin, a 31-year-traditional London resident, is preparing to run the 2026 London Marathon to raise awareness and funds for Sepsis Research FEAT. Her journey is deeply personal, as she nearly lost her life to sepsis in September 2024 after what began as a sore throat.
From Sore Throat to Life-Threatening Sepsis
Jennifer’s ordeal began with a sore throat, a common ailment she initially dismissed as a typical “London bug” circulating among her colleagues and friends Mirror. She was about to travel to Porto, Portugal, to celebrate her 31st birthday and didn’t believe it was anything serious. However, her condition rapidly deteriorated once she arrived.
Experiencing full-body aches, fever, shivering, and vomiting, Jennifer spent most of her birthday weekend in bed. She recalled her mother’s previous experience with sepsis and considered the possibility, but initially attributed her symptoms to the flu Sepsis Research FEAT.
A Critical Diagnosis and Lengthy Hospital Stay
Upon returning to London, Jennifer consulted a doctor who initially diagnosed her with the flu. However, when her fever persisted, she sought emergency medical attention. Doctors discovered she was critically ill and fortunate to have returned to the hospital when she did, as she likely wouldn’t have survived the night Mirror.
Jennifer spent six days in a ventilated coma and a total of three weeks in the hospital, including 10 days in intensive care. The infection was ultimately identified as being caused by the bacteria Fusobacterium necrophorum, which often causes severe sore throats Mirror.
Running for a Cause
The experience was described as “traumatic” and profoundly changed Jennifer’s outlook on life. Now, she is committed to raising awareness about sepsis and supporting research efforts. She is running the London Marathon on April 26th, 2026, to raise funds for Sepsis Research FEAT, the UK’s only sepsis research charity 2026 TCS London Marathon.
“I wish people knew how quickly things can change, and that the sooner support is received for symptoms, the greater the chance of recovery,” Jennifer stated Mirror.
