University of Latvia to Open New Dentistry and Optometry Clinic This Summer

Riga, Latvia – The University of Latvia (UL) is set to expand its medical education and healthcare services with the opening of a new Dentistry and Optometry Clinic and Training Centre this summer. The facility will integrate academic learning, scientific research, and clinical practice, aiming to bolster Latvia’s healthcare system and the university’s regional competitiveness.

A Multifunctional Hub for Education and Healthcare

The new clinic, developed in collaboration with the Mūkusalas Business Centre (MBC), will function as a study base, clinical practice site, and healthcare service provider. This model is designed to foster a closer connection between theoretical studies and real-world clinical experience for students, while simultaneously offering high-quality dental and optometry services to the public.

Strategic Partnership and Location

A memorandum of cooperation between the University of Latvia and the Mūkusalas Business Centre was signed in September 2024, paving the way for this project. Colliers Baltics facilitated the agreement, securing a 1,200 m² space within the MBC for the new facility.

The clinic’s location near UL’s Academic Centre is considered strategically important, allowing for close coordination between teaching, research, and clinical activities. According to UL Vice-Rector for Development Enno Ence, the partnership symbolically and physically connects education, science, and industry, referencing the pedestrian bridge over the Kīleveina ditch where the memorandum was signed.

Modern Facilities and Infrastructure

The centre will be equipped with cutting-edge technology and designed to meet the needs of both students and the local community. The premises are scheduled to be officially handed over to the university on June 1st, with construction and preparation work continuing until then. This move will address the space constraints at UL’s current dentistry clinic on 5 Aspazijas Boulevard, allowing those structural units to relocate to the “Rakstu māja” at UL’s Academic Centre.

Strengthening Latvia’s Healthcare Future

“This project is a crucial step in the development of UL’s medical studies,” said Kristaps Jaudzems, Dean of UL’s Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences. “It will enable us to forge a closer connection between academic education and real clinical practice, while providing a modern, safe, and high-quality environment for both student training and patient care.”

Mūkusalas Business Centre Board Chair Iveta Bahmane added that the establishment of the training and clinical centre is an important step towards developing Mūkusala as a healthcare and medical education cluster, creating an environment where academic education and high-quality healthcare services converge.
