Navarrete Unifies WBO and IBF Super Featherweight Titles with Dominant TKO of Nunez
Emanuel Navarrete added the IBF super featherweight title to his WBO crown, stopping compatriot Eduardo Nunez in the 11th round at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, on Saturday night. The victory marked Navarrete’s 40th career win against just two defeats and one no-contest.
Navarrete’s Dominance
The fight, initially expected to be closely contested, saw Navarrete steadily dismantle Nunez over the course of the bout. Navarrete (40-2-1, 33 KOs) began to assert control in the seventh round, increasing the pressure and punishing Nunez to both the body and head. By the ninth round, Nunez’s right eye was severely swollen, significantly impairing his vision.
Fight Stoppage
Despite Nunez’s desire to continue, the ringside doctor intervened before the start of the 11th round, advising referee Benjamin Rodriguez to stop the fight due to the extent of the swelling around Nunez’s right eye. Nunez (30-2, 28 KOs) expressed respect for the decision to protect his health, acknowledging Navarrete as a formidable opponent.
Navarrete’s Post-Fight Comments
“It’s challenging to see your opponent hurting in there, but it’s also really difficult to not continue and go on to win the fight,” Navarrete said after the fight. “You never know what might happen in those last rounds. He could catch you with a shot and it could be over. So, I needed to continue doing my work in there.” Navarrete landed 182 of 381 power punches throughout the contest, a 48% success rate.
Looking Ahead for Navarrete
With the unification complete, Navarrete now holds two major super featherweight titles. Potential future opponents include WBC champion O’Shaquie Foster and WBA titleholder Lamont Roach. Navarrete, who had only one fight in 2025 – a no-contest against Charly Suarez – appears to be back to his best form.
Nunez’s Perspective
“I would have liked to finish, but I respect the decision to protect my health,” Nunez stated. “I considered [Navarrete] the toughest fighter at 130 pounds. I’m a fan of his. I follow his career and admire him.”
