Luke Thompson on Leading ‘Bridgerton’ Season 4 and the Challenges of Fame

Luke Thompson, who portrays Benedict Bridgerton in the Netflix hit series, has reflected on the experience of leading Season 4 and the surprising difficulties of the accompanying press tour. While he found the production process itself rewarding, Thompson admitted the promotional demands posed a unique challenge.

A Gift and a Challenge

Thompson described leading a Bridgerton series as a “huge gift” and a “privilege,” contrasting warnings he received about potentially being overshadowed by the role. He found the experience empowering, allowing him to fully immerse himself in the character and the story. “It’s like standing on top of a tall building. You see everything,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.

The Press Tour Paradox

However, the extensive press tour proved to be more taxing than the filming itself. Thompson expressed a discomfort with the expectation that actors should readily share personal details, noting a tension between promoting the show and protecting his own privacy. He emphasized that the show ultimately “belongs to the audience” and that his role is to share what he’s comfortable with, while maintaining personal boundaries.

Global Reception and ‘Benophie’

Thompson and his co-star, Yerin Ha (Sophie Baek), recently completed a global press tour following the release of the fourth season. He found it fascinating to observe how different cultures interpret Bridgerton, noting the telenovela appeal in Spanish-speaking countries and the fairytale resonance in Eastern Europe. The season finale saw Benedict and Sophie successfully navigate societal obstacles, convincing Queen Charlotte and the Ton of Sophie’s noble lineage.

Benedict’s Complexity

Thompson highlighted the show’s ability to give each lead character a distinct narrative, avoiding a formulaic approach. He appreciated the opportunity to portray a more flawed and complex Benedict, pointing to moments in Part Two where his character is less sympathetic. He likened Benedict’s journey to a “Mr. Darcy trajectory in reverse,” while acknowledging that Bridgerton is unique and doesn’t rely heavily on literary references.

Chemistry with Yerin Ha

Thompson praised his co-star Yerin Ha, describing her as “sophisticated and subtle” and a joy to work with. He fondly recalled filming the intimate gazebo scene at the masquerade ball, noting the quiet and magical atmosphere. He expressed a desire to collaborate with Ha again, perhaps in a theatrical production.

Looking Ahead

Thompson has recently wrapped filming on Elsinore, a film about Ian Charleson’s final performance as Hamlet. He described the project as a “lovely subject” and a “real love letter to theater.” He also indicated a willingness to return to the Bridgerton universe, comparing the experience to a cyclical event like Glastonbury Festival, with a natural break between seasons. He also noted the exciting development of younger Bridgerton siblings, Florence Hunt (Hyacinth) and Will Tilston (Gregory), coming into their own.

As Thompson passes the torch to another lead in future seasons, he reflects on his time as captain of the Bridgerton ship with a mix of nostalgia and relief.

All episodes of Bridgerton season four are currently streaming on Netflix.
