Piastri Confident McLaren’s Engine Status Won’t Hinder 2026 Title Bid
Oscar Piastri, the McLaren Formula One driver, has dismissed concerns that the team’s customer engine status will put them at a disadvantage in the 2026 season as they pursue a third consecutive constructors’ championship. McLaren will continue to be powered by Mercedes HPP, but with the introduction of complex new power units, questions have arisen about whether customer teams can compete effectively against those with full works programs.
Mercedes Partnership a Key Advantage
Despite the potential challenges, Piastri believes McLaren’s close relationship with Mercedes High Performance Powertrains (HPP) will mitigate any disadvantages. “Being a works team obviously has its advantages, especially now that there is development again on the engine side of things,” Piastri stated to media, including RacingNews365. He emphasized that the issues encountered during testing in Barcelona were unrelated to their customer status.
Acknowledging the Integration Gap
Piastri acknowledged that works teams like Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull have a head start in integrating the new regulations, having had years to adapt. However, he countered that McLaren has been actively working on the process for a considerable time. “Yes, we may be behind a little in that they’ve had years to integrate these rules into their car, but we’ve been in that process for a long time, so I don’t think it is necessarily a disadvantage,” he explained.
Aero Development and Organization are Crucial
Piastri believes success in 2026 will hinge on maximizing aerodynamic development and organizational efficiency. “It is going to be about who was able to capitalise in the 12 months on aero testing and just getting things organised,” he concluded.
