Xiaomi Challenges Apple and Samsung with Global Launch of Xiaomi 17 Series

Barcelona – Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has intensified its global expansion with the launch of its flagship Xiaomi 17 series at MWC Barcelona, marking a significant step in its ambition to challenge Apple and Samsung in the premium smartphone market.

Xiaomi 17 Series: A New Contender

The launch event on Saturday saw the overseas release of the Xiaomi 17 and Xiaomi 17 Ultra, following their initial domestic launch months prior. Both models are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor. The Xiaomi 17 starts at €999 (approximately $1,180 USD), while the Xiaomi 17 Ultra is priced at €1,499 (approximately $1,675 USD).1

Market Positioning and Competition

The Xiaomi 17 series directly competes with Apple and Samsung in the premium smartphone segment, defined as devices costing over $600. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 begins at $900, and Apple’s iPhone 17 has a starting price of $800.1

Xiaomi’s Global Market Share

According to data from Counterpoint, Xiaomi held the third position in the global smartphone market in the fourth quarter of 2025, with an 11% market share, trailing Apple (25%) and Samsung (18%).12

Expanding Beyond Smartphones

Alongside the Xiaomi 17 series, the company also unveiled the Xiaomi Pad 8 tablet series, the Watch 5 smartwatch, and the Vision Gran Turismo electric hypercar.3

The Competitive Landscape in 2025

The global smartphone market in 2025 is characterized by intense competition, with Samsung and Apple continuing to lead, while brands like Xiaomi, Transsion, and Honor are rapidly gaining market share. Xiaomi delivers exceptional value with flagship features at lower prices, appealing to performance-focused and budget-conscious users.4
