Tonje Brenna’s Background and Political Career

Tonje Brenna (born October 21, 1987) is a prominent figure in Norwegian politics. She currently serves as the parliamentary leader of the Labour Party, a position she has held since 2025. Prior to this, she served as Minister of Labour and Social Inclusion from October 2023 to September 2025, and before that, as Minister of Education from October 2021 to October 2023.

Brenna’s political experience also includes serving as the Chairwoman of the Viken County Cabinet from 2020 to 2021 and as a member of the Storting representing Akershus since 2025, having been a deputy member from 2017 to 2025. She has also held positions as a political advisor and as the General Secretary of the Workers’ Youth League (AUF).

Early Life and Personal Experiences

Brenna was born in Oslo and spent part of her childhood in Holmlia before moving to Jessheim in Akershus county at age 12. She is a survivor of the 2011 Utøya massacre, an event that profoundly impacted her life and political commitment. She authored a book in 2021 detailing her experiences during and after the tragedy, titled 22. Juli – og alle dagene etterpå.

Brenna was married to Vetle Larsen in 2022, but the couple separated in July 2023. She has two children, one from a previous relationship.
