Zelensky, Merkel, and Wałęsa Receive Top Honors in New European Recognition System

Strasbourg – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and former Polish President Lech Wałęsa have been named among the first recipients of the European Parliament’s newly established European Order of Merit. The honor recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to European values and integration.

A New System of Recognition

The European Order of Merit, launched this year to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, features three tiers: Member of the Order, Honourable Member of the Order, and Distinguished Member of the Order. Zelenskyy, Merkel, and Wałęsa were awarded the highest distinction, as announced by European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.

Honorees Across Fields

Beyond the political leaders, the inaugural list of honorees spans diverse fields. Moldovan President Maia Sandu and the Vatican’s Secretary of State Pietro Parolin were recognized as Honourable Members of the Order, alongside former Finnish President Sauli Niinistö. Other recipients include Greek basketball star Giannis Antetokounmpo, chef and humanitarian José Andrés, founder of World Central Kitchen, and the members of the Irish rock band U2.

Bono’s Longstanding Support for Europe

U2 frontman Bono, known for his advocacy against poverty and philanthropic work, has consistently voiced his support for the European Union, even displaying the EU flag at concerts. In a 2018 speech, he cautioned against threats to the Union and urged its defense.

Merkel’s Legacy Under Scrutiny

While lauded for her leadership during her tenure as Chancellor of Germany (2005-2021), particularly during the presidency of Donald Trump, Angela Merkel’s legacy has faced increased scrutiny in recent years. Criticism has centered on Germany’s growing dependence on Russian gas during her time in office, especially following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The announcement of her award reportedly drew boos from some members of the European Parliament.

Selection Process

The selection committee responsible for choosing the honorees included European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, EP Vice-Presidents Sofia Vilmes and Eva Kopača, and prominent figures such as former EU Commissioner Michel Barnier, former EC President José Manuel Barroso, former EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Giuseppe Borrell, and former Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta. Nominations were submitted by heads of state and government, parliamentary presidents, and leaders of EU institutions.

Award Ceremony

A formal award ceremony is scheduled to take place during the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg from May 18 to May 21.
