Dutch Frigate HNLMS Evertsen Deployed to Mediterranean to Protect Allies

The Netherlands has deployed the air defense and command frigate HNLMS Evertsen to the eastern Mediterranean Sea to contribute to the defense of allies and the security of the region. The deployment, which began this week and is expected to last until early April, comes in response to recent developments in the Middle East and Iran’s attacks on neighboring countries.

Defensive Mission Receives Parliamentary Support

Despite initial concerns, a majority in the Dutch House of Representatives appears to support the Cabinet’s decision to deploy the warship. A technical briefing in Parliament addressed questions regarding the risks faced by the Dutch mission, including the potential for escalation and the availability of medical care for personnel. Officials assured MPs that the mission is clearly defined, personnel are well-trained, and medical support is available.

Role within Carrier Strike Group

HNLMS Evertsen is operating as part of the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle carrier strike group (CSG). The frigate’s sensors and weapon systems are designed to defend against threats such as drones and missiles. While the command structure rests with the French carrier, Dutch military leadership retains final say over the deployment of the frigate.

Defensive Capabilities and Limitations

MPs were reassured that the mission is defensive in nature and that HNLMS Evertsen is equipped for air defense, lacking offensive capabilities. The frigate will contribute to protecting the territory of allies, including Cyprus, and ensuring the security of other naval vessels within the region. However, clarifying questions remained regarding the scope of defense, specifically concerning the protection of U.S. Assets in Cyprus. Defense officials confirmed that Cyprus, including U.S. Bases, is included within the defensive perimeter, but the mission does not extend to defending all U.S. Actions.

Current Status and Future Considerations

HNLMS Evertsen was already conducting a training mission in the Baltic Sea with the Charles de Gaulle when the decision was made to extend its deployment to the Mediterranean. The ships are currently near Malta. The deployment is initially planned for a few weeks, until early April. Any extension beyond this timeframe will require a recent decision and consultation with the House of Representatives.

Potential for Russian Encounters

Concerns were raised regarding potential encounters with the Russian fleet operating in the same region. The Dutch government has committed to addressing these concerns and preventing accidental escalations.

SP’s Remaining Questions

The Socialist Party (SP) continues to seek further clarification regarding the risks of becoming involved in a wider conflict and the potential consequences should HNLMS Evertsen or the Charles de Gaulle be attacked. The SP also advocates for the Dutch cabinet to condemn attacks by the U.S. And Israel on Iran.
