WNBA CBA Negotiations Progress Amidst Season Start Concerns

Negotiations between the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) and the WNBA Players Association (WNBPA) are ongoing, extending past a self-imposed March 10 deadline, with the potential to impact the scheduled start of the season on May 8. Despite the delay, both sides express optimism and a shared desire to reach an agreement.

Key Points of Negotiation

The WNBA and WNBPA have exchanged nine proposals in recent days, addressing a wide range of issues. Significant progress has been made, with the league offering substantial increases in several key areas, according to a proposal obtained by CNBC. However, revenue sharing remains a point of contention.

Salary Increases

The league’s latest proposal includes a significant increase to the salary cap, quadrupling it to $6.2 million, up from the current $1.5 million. This cap would increase annually in line with league and team revenue growth. Average player salaries are projected to rise from approximately $120,000 currently to $570,000 in the first year of the new agreement, reaching $850,000 by year six. Maximum salaries would too see a substantial increase, exceeding $1.3 million initially and growing to nearly $2 million.

Revenue Sharing

While details remain under discussion, the league has proposed a new, uncapped revenue-sharing system tied to both league and team revenues. The proposal no longer includes minimum thresholds for revenue sharing to be triggered.

Facility and Travel Improvements

The league is also offering improvements to player facilities, including upgrades to locker rooms, weight rooms, and treatment areas. The proposal includes provisions for charter flight and first-class travel amenities for all league events, as well as increased performance bonuses.

Player Perspective

WNBPA President Nneka Ogwumike expressed a sense of progress in the negotiations, stating that players are “feeling movement” in the talks. She emphasized the players’ desire to begin the season, a sentiment echoed by the league.

Upcoming Dates

The WNBA draft is scheduled for April 13, and the season is currently set to begin on May 8. The impact of the ongoing negotiations on these dates remains uncertain.
