Apple AirPods Max 2: A Deep Dive into the Upgraded Over-Ear Headphones

Apple today announced the AirPods Max 2, the long-overdue successor to its 2020 premium over-ear headphones. The 2024 refresh swapped Lightning for USB-C, but this time, Apple has delivered a more substantial update, integrating the H2 chip and a host of novel features.

What Remains the Same

The overall design of the AirPods Max 2 remains largely unchanged. The over-ear design, aluminum ear cups, stainless steel headband, mesh canopy, and Digital Crown control all carry over from the original model. Even the Smart Case, which drew criticism for its limited protection, remains the same. Most of the upgrades are under the hood.

Key Upgrades Powered by the H2 Chip

The core of the AirPods Max 2’s improvements lies in the integration of the H2 chip, previously found in the AirPods Pro 2, AirPods 4, and AirPods Pro 3. This chip enables a wide range of new capabilities.

1. Enhanced Active Noise Cancellation (ANC)

Apple claims the ANC on the Max 2 is up to 1.5x more effective than the previous generation [Apple Newsroom]. This improvement targets sustained low-frequency sounds like airplane engines and commuter trains.

2. High Dynamic Range Amplifier

A new amplifier delivers cleaner, lower-distortion audio with more headroom, reducing clipping at higher volumes [PCMag].

3. 24-bit/48kHz Lossless Audio

Connecting via the included USB-C cable enables support for 24-bit/48kHz lossless audio, a significant upgrade from the original Max’s wireless AAC and lack of wired lossless support.

4. Adaptive Audio

Adaptive Audio automatically blends ANC and Transparency modes based on the surrounding environment, dynamically adjusting to provide the optimal listening experience.

5. Conversation Awareness

When you start speaking, the Max 2 lowers the music volume and amplifies ambient sound, facilitating quick conversations without removing the headphones.

6. Personalized Volume

The headphones learn your listening habits and adjust playback volume accordingly, creating a personalized audio experience.

7. Live Translation

Powered by Apple Intelligence, Live Translation offers real-time language conversion directly into your ears.

8. Voice Isolation

Voice Isolation prioritizes your speech during phone calls, eliminating wind noise and background chatter.

9. Siri Interactions

Head gestures – a nod to confirm, a shake to decline – allow you to respond to Siri announcements without speaking.

10. Ultra-Low Latency

Wired via USB-C, the Max 2 delivers ultra-low latency audio, beneficial for video editing, gaming, and professional audio workflows.

11. ‘Studio-quality’ Recording

The retuned microphone array aims to provide higher-fidelity vocal and instrument capture for podcasters, musicians, and content creators.

12. Camera Remote

The Digital Crown can now trigger the Camera app on a paired iPhone or iPad, allowing for remote photo and video capture.

13. Streamlined Siri Activation

The “Hey” prefix is no longer required to activate Siri; simply say “Siri” to initiate the assistant.

14. Loud Sound Reduction

The Max 2 identifies and attenuates sudden loud sounds, offering a degree of hearing protection.

15. Bluetooth 5.3

Updated to Bluetooth 5.3 for improved stability and power efficiency.

16. Precision Finding

U2 chip support enables Precision Finding within the Find My app, providing directional tracking to locate the headphones.

17. Improved Transparency Mode

A new DSP algorithm enhances the naturalness of ambient sound in Transparency mode.

18. IP54 Rating

The Max 2 now carries an IP54 rating, offering dust resistance and protection against water splashes.

19. Enhanced Spatial Audio

Spatial Audio benefits from improved instrument localization, bass response, and overall clarity.

20. Automatic Switching 2.0

Faster switching between Apple devices.

21. New DSP Algorithm

Optimizes the entire audio chain for improved performance.

22. Multi-user Spatial audio

Allows multiple listeners to share a Spatial Audio session with personalized head-tracking profiles.

23. Thread networking

Integrates the Max 2 into the smart home ecosystem.

24. USB-C data support

Full data transfer capabilities via USB-C.

Availability and Pricing

The AirPods Max 2 are available to order starting March 25th in midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue, with shipping beginning in early April. Pricing remains at $549 [Apple Newsroom].
