Roche Accelerates Drug and Diagnostics Development with Expanded NVIDIA AI Factory

Roche is significantly expanding its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure with the addition of over 2,176 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs, bringing its total GPU capacity to more than 3,500. This investment establishes Roche as the pharmaceutical industry leader in hybrid-cloud AI factory capabilities, designed to accelerate the discovery, development, and manufacturing of new therapeutics and diagnostics .

Building an AI-Accelerated Healthcare Organization

The expanded AI factory, powered by NVIDIA’s accelerated computing and AI technologies, supports Roche’s vision of becoming an AI-accelerated healthcare organization. The infrastructure is strategically deployed across Roche’s operations in the United States and Europe, embedding AI throughout the entire value chain .

Accelerating Drug Discovery with AI

AI is already transforming Roche and Genentech’s research and development processes, and the new infrastructure will further accelerate this progress. Specifically, AI is being integrated into Genentech’s “Lab-in-the-Loop” strategy, connecting experiments, data, and AI in an iterative process to address complex challenges. Approximately 90% of Genentech’s eligible small-molecule programs now incorporate AI .

Early results demonstrate the impact of this approach. In one oncology program, AI accelerated the design of a degrader molecule by 25%. In another, AI facilitated the development of a backup drug candidate in just seven months, a process that traditionally takes over two years .

Digital Twins for Pharmaceutical Manufacturing

Roche is also leveraging NVIDIA Omniverse to create digital twins of its manufacturing facilities, including a new GLP-1 manufacturing facility in North Carolina. These virtual environments allow for the simulation and optimization of complex systems before physical implementation, accelerating development and improving efficiency .

AI is also being applied to regulatory documentation, quality assurance, and production scheduling, with the potential to create significant efficiency gains across the global supply chain .

Advancing Diagnostics and Digital Health

Roche’s diagnostics business is also benefiting from the AI infrastructure. Accelerated computing and NVIDIA Parabricks software are enabling insights from vast datasets. In digital pathology, NVIDIA technologies are used to scan images and detect subtle disease patterns. Roche is also utilizing NVIDIA NeMo Guardrails to ensure the safety and reliability of AI models in digital health applications .

Strategic Collaboration with NVIDIA

This expansion builds upon a strategic collaboration between Roche and NVIDIA that began in 2023. Roche’s combined on-premise and cloud GPU infrastructure now exceeds 3,500 Blackwell GPUs, representing the largest announced GPU footprint in the pharmaceutical industry , .

“In healthcare, time is the most critical variable; every day saved means a life-changing medicine or diagnostic reaches a patient sooner,” said Wafaa Mamilli, Roche’s Chief Digital and Technology Officer .
