Home of the Year Returns with a Poignant Farewell to Hugh Wallace

Series 12 of Home of the Year has returned to RTÉ One, offering viewers a glimpse into stunning Irish homes while simultaneously serving as a touching tribute to the late Hugh Wallace. The season, which premiered on March 3, 2026, features the final episodes with beloved judge Wallace, who passed away suddenly at home at the age of 68.

A Season of Remembrance

The current season of Home of the Year is particularly poignant, as it was completed before Wallace’s death. According to Siobhán Lam, a fellow judge on the show, the season is intentionally designed as a celebration of Wallace’s passion and expertise. “It’s a tribute to Hugh and what he did best,” Lam stated in an interview with RTÉ Lifestyle, adding that Wallace “adored his TV shows; it’s where he shone.” RTÉ reports.

How the Competition Works

Each week, judges Amanda Bone, Siobhán Lam, and the late Hugh Wallace evaluate three homes based on individuality, functionality, and clever design. Each home receives a score out of 10, and the home with the highest combined score advances to the grand final in April, where one homeowner will be crowned the winner.

Episode three showcased a diverse range of homes across Ireland:

• Marc and Christine, Wicklow: This spectacular new build in Wicklow blends modern design with homely comfort, creating a welcoming space for family and friends. The design incorporates influences from Australian architecture, including large indoor/outdoor living areas and overhangs for climate control.
• Tara, Down: Tara transformed a former gate lodge in County Down into a cozy cottage. The extensive renovation, which took place after the building had been uninhabited for over 30 years, involved completely gutting the structure and adding running water and electricity.
• Kelly and Fiachra, Clare: Kelly and Fiachra built their dream home on family land in County Clare in 2024. The U-shaped design maximizes breathtaking views, and the interior features a calm, contemporary aesthetic.

Wallace’s Legacy

Hugh Wallace, a successful architect, became a national treasure through his appearances on Home of the Year. The Irish Times notes that he brought humility and self-awareness to the show, qualities that endeared him to viewers.
