PS3 Receives Update 4.93 to Retain Blu-ray Drive Working

Sony has released a new system software update, version 4.93, for the PlayStation 3, nearly two decades after the console’s initial launch. While updates for the PS3 are infrequent, this one is crucial for owners who still leverage the console to play Blu-ray discs.

Why the Update Matters

The primary purpose of update 4.93 is to renew the Blu-ray player encryption key. According to Sony, this key expires periodically and must be updated to continue playing Blu-ray movies and games. As reported by MP1st, without this update, the Blu-ray drive may stop functioning, rendering physical media unplayable.

AACS Encryption and Blu-ray Playback

Blu-ray discs utilize Advanced Access Content System (AACS) technology for copyright protection. What Hi-Fi? explains that AACS employs an encryption key on both the disc and the playback device. This key expires approximately every 12 to 18 months and requires renewal to maintain functionality. The update adds a new encryption key for the Blu-ray player built into the console, allowing users to continue using physical discs.

Update Size and Installation

The update is approximately 200 MB in size and can be downloaded directly to the console or installed via a USB drive. Sony provides instructions on its support page for manual installation for those without an internet connection.

PS3 Legacy and Continued Support

Launched in November 2006, the PlayStation 3 sold over 87.4 million units worldwide. Despite its age, Sony continues to provide occasional support for the console, demonstrating a commitment to its user base and the Blu-ray format. The PS3 was also a popular Blu-ray player, offering a relatively affordable option for experiencing the then-new high-definition format.

Impact on DVDs and CDs

It is currently unclear whether this update affects the playback of DVDs or CDs, or if it is solely focused on Blu-ray discs.
