Project Hail Mary Soars to Box Office Success, Signaling a Shift for Hollywood
Original stories finding their way to the big screen are thriving at the early 2026 box office. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, launched with a domestic gross of $80.6 million – the best opening of the year and a new benchmark for Amazon Studios. The film also performed strongly internationally, collecting $60.4 million from over 80 markets, topping the charts in 60 of them, for a global debut of $141 million.
A Win for Amazon MGM Studios
Project Hail Mary represents a significant victory for Amazon MGM Studios as it strives to establish itself as a major Hollywood player. This success comes at a pivotal moment, coinciding with the proposed merger of Paramount-Skydance and Warner Bros., a deal that has sparked concerns within the industry regarding potential job losses and a reduction in the diversity of film production.
Defying Franchise Fatigue
The film’s performance challenges the prevailing notion that the multiplex is now dominated by sequels and established franchises. Project Hail Mary joins Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer as only the second non-sequel or non-franchise film in the last decade to open to $80 million or more domestically.
Gosling and Lord/Miller Break Records
While Ryan Gosling’s Barbie remains his highest-grossing film, Project Hail Mary marks his biggest domestic opening in a leading role, not adjusted for inflation. It also represents a domestic best for directors Phil Lord and Miller.
The Story Behind the Mission
Based on the 2021 novel by Andy Weir, Project Hail Mary follows Dr. Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), a former biologist and middle school science teacher, as he embarks on a desperate mission to save Earth. He awakens on a spaceship light-years from home with no memory of his identity or purpose, only to discover he must solve the mystery of a substance causing the sun to dim and forge an unexpected friendship along the way. Sandra Hüller also stars in the film.
Critical and Audience Acclaim
Initial projections estimated a $50 million to $60 million debut, but Project Hail Mary exceeded expectations thanks to overwhelmingly positive reviews and audience reception. The film earned an A CinemaScore, near-perfect PostTrak exits, and a 96% audience ranking on Rotten Tomatoes (with a 95% critics score).
A Resurgence of Originality
Following Project Hail Mary and Oppenheimer, the next-biggest opening for a non-sequel or franchise installment reached $60 million or more domestically with Us ($71 million). Excluding those three titles, only two other films have opened to $50 million or more in the post-pandemic era: Apple’s F1: The Movie and It Ends With Us.
“Openings like this is what makes this business special,” said Amazon MGM domestic distribution chief Kevin Wilson. “You could sense how big this film was going to be with the rave reviews from the early screenings and massive presales. Congrats to everyone who was involved in making this film.”
As The Hollywood Reporter noted, “Ryan Gosling proves he can have chemistry with a rock in thrilling space odyssey warmed by humanity and hope.”
Global Reach and International Expansion
The film opened in 82 international markets, including the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, Korea, Japan, and China. Excluding China, its opening weekend results were comparable to those of Interstellar and Dune, making it only the fourth non-sequel/non-franchise film to open above $50 million internationally post-COVID, alongside Oppenheimer, F1: The Movie, and Superman.
The film opened at No. 1 in over 60 countries. The success underscores the importance of international distribution networks, something Amazon MGM Studios is actively building.
Pixar’s Comeback and Other Box Office Players
Originality is also proving successful for Pixar, with its new film Hoppers breaking a recent slump and becoming the top-grossing Hollywood film globally with $242.6 million in ticket sales after three weekends. It also leads domestically, earning another $18 million for a cumulative total of $120.4 million.
Franchises continue to perform well, with Dhurandhar: The Revenge, the latest installment in an Indian action-thriller series, exceeding expectations with a $10 million+ debut. Searchlight Pictures’ horror-comedy Ready or Not 2: Here I Come placed fourth in its North American launch with an estimated $9.1 million, achieving a global start of $11.9 million.
