Brewers Conclude Spring Training with Victory Over Reds, Sproat Shines
MILWAUKEE, WI – The Milwaukee Brewers wrapped up their spring training schedule with a 4-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday afternoon at American Family Field. Starting pitcher Brandon Sproat delivered a strong performance in what was likely his final tune-up before the start of the regular season.
Sproat Impresses in Final Spring Start
Sproat pitched four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and two walks whereas striking out five batters. He worked effectively around a Matt McLain walk in the first inning, recording strikeouts of Elly De La Cruz and Sal Stewart. He continued to demonstrate control in the second, navigating another walk and securing a double play to end the inning.
The Brewers offense provided support for Sproat in the bottom of the second inning when Jake Bauers hit a solo home run – his seventh of the spring – over the right-center field wall, giving Milwaukee a 1-0 lead. Sproat continued his strong outing through the third and fourth innings, yielding only a single to Eugenio Suárez.
Brewers Add to Lead, Harrison and Fitzpatrick Close Out Game
Following Sproat’s departure, Kyle Harrison took the mound for the Brewers and pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run on five hits and a walk, while also recording five strikeouts. The Brewers extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth when Bauers doubled and later scored on a single by David Hamilton. Hamilton also stole his seventh base of the spring.
The Reds narrowed the gap in the sixth inning with a leadoff home run from De La Cruz. However, the Brewers responded in the bottom of the seventh with two runs driven in by a single from Brandon Lockridge, extending the lead to 4-1. Brian Fitzpatrick finished the game, securing the final two outs for the Brewers.
Bauers Leads Spring Offense
Jake Bauers finished spring training with an impressive .462 batting average, a .571 on-base percentage, and a 1.154 slugging percentage, totaling seven home runs and six doubles in 15 games.
The Brewers will open the regular season this Thursday against the Chicago White Sox at American Family Field, with Jacob Misiorowski scheduled to start. Shane Smith will start for the White Sox. First pitch is set for 1:10 p.m.
