Emmanuel Wanyonyi set a new men’s 1,000m world record at the Diamond League meeting in Monaco, clocking 2:11.83. The 21-year-old Kenyan, who is the reigning Olympic and world 800m champion, eclipsed the previous record held by Noah Ngeny since 1999.

Wightman, the 2022 1500m world champion, pushed the pace throughout the final stages of the race. He finished in 2:12.77, a personal best that moved him to fifth on the world all-time list. Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati, the Olympic bronze medallist, secured third place, while Great Britain’s Ben Pattison finished fifth.

Wanyonyi’s Focus on Progression

Despite the historic performance, Wanyonyi remained measured when discussing his future ambitions. Addressing speculation regarding the 800m world record—currently held by David Rudisha—the Kenyan athlete chose to focus on his own development rather than chasing specific historical marks.

"I don’t want to talk about the world record in the 800m," Wanyonyi stated. "I first want to run fast and improve my personal best. Let me keep quiet. Actions speak louder than words."
