The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the Grammys, and SAG-AFTRA have proposed a voluntary labeling system to identify generative AI in music. The initiative introduces digital markers to distinguish between “AI-Generated” and “AI-assisted” tracks, aiming to provide transparency for listeners as synthetic content floods streaming platforms.
The New AI Labeling Standard
Industry leaders are proposing a visual system similar to the “explicit” lyrics tags currently used by streaming services. According to a joint announcement from the RIAA and its partners, the system will use two distinct markers:

- AI-Generated: A black block with a large “AI” label for tracks created entirely by generative AI.
- AI-assisted: A white block with a smaller “ai” label for songs where humans used AI as a tool in the creative process.
RIAA Chairman and CEO Mitch Glazier and IFPI CEO Vikki Oakley stated in a joint release that these labels provide a “scalable approach to transparency” because human artistry and authenticity remain critical to music lovers globally.
The Surge of Synthetic Music on Streaming
The push for labeling follows data indicating a massive influx of AI-generated content on major platforms. According to reports cited by the RIAA and IFPI:
- Deezer reported that AI-generated songs account for 44% of all new uploads.
- Apple Music stated that one-third of new music uploaded to the service is “100% AI.”
Protecting Authorship and Artistic Intent
The Grammys have already integrated AI guidelines into their award eligibility, and CEO Harvey Mason Jr. argues that clear communication about AI use is essential for the industry’s future. Mason Jr. stated that the initiative ensures “creativity, authorship, and artistic intent remain at the center of every song,” which he believes will strengthen trust between artists and fans.
Implementation and Industry Outlook
While the RIAA and its partners have proposed the framework, the actual rollout depends on the cooperation of streaming giants. It remains unclear if or when services like Spotify, Apple Music, or Amazon Music will officially adopt these specific digital markers. This move mirrors the industry’s historical response to content concerns, drawing parallels to the introduction of the Parental Advisory sticker over 35 years ago.
- Who: RIAA, The Grammys, SAG-AFTRA, and IFPI.
- What: Voluntary “AI” (Generated) and “ai” (Assisted) digital tags.
- Why: To combat the rise of AI music, which makes up 44% of new Deezer uploads and 33% of new Apple Music uploads.
- Goal: Preserve human authorship and provide listener transparency.
