LSU defeated UCLA 9-5 in a game that started on Monday night and finished on Tuesday morning due to thunderstorms in Omaha.

LSU kept the offensive momentum after the pause of the game while holding UCLA scoreless through the six innings that were played on Tuesday.

As the game resumed, LSU knew the importance of winning, as the loser would have a five-and-a-half-hour turnaround before playing Arkansas at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

“We mapped out the bracket and all scenarios of how we were going to attack it because it’s a double elimination tournament, it’s not a death sentence to lose a game here,” head coach Jay Johnson said.

The Razorbacks are one of the hottest teams in the tournament following Gage Wood’s no-hitter in Arkansas’ 3-0 win over Murray State in the elimination game on Monday.

To start the game Monday night, Anthony Eyanson allowed three hits and two runs in the first inning. With their backs to the wall early, the Tigers needed an answer, and they responded with an RBI single from Jake Brown and then a three-run home run off the bat of Jared Jones to take the lead.

With a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third inning, LSU ran off Landon Stump, marking back-to-back games that the Tigers had gotten to the opponents’ bullpen before the fourth inning in Omaha.

Then at 7:20 p.m. CT, the game entered a weather delay in the top of the fourth inning as storms rolled into the area. After a good night’s sleep and some breakfast, baseball resumed at 10:03 a.m. CT with the Tigers leading 5-3.

Casan Evans toed the rubber for the Tigers to restart this game, and he recorded a scoreless fourth inning as the Tiger offense came up to bat.

“He’s got ability, and very rarely do you get that combination of talent, makeup, character and maturity that’s ready for what we have to do,” Johnson said. “He has it.”

And in the bottom of the inning, with two outs, LSU collected a hit, a walk, an RBI single from Steven Milam, and then an RBI single from Brown to extend the lead to 7-3.

UCLA was able to hold LSU scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings, but Daniel Dickinson was able to plate Jones on a two-out single to extend the lead to 8-3.

LSU faced eight pitchers in this game, but despite the different pitching looks and approaches, LSU was able to score nine runs.

“Different looks are sometimes tough, but you’ve just got to stay locked in,” Milam said. “Coach Johnson does a good job with the whole team and getting us dialed in.”

Meanwhile, Evans held the Bruins scoreless through 4.1 innings, but he was replaced by Cooper Williams in the eighth inning. Evans exited the game with four hits and one free pass surrendered while striking out five Bruins.

Williams allowed both of the base runners that Evans left on base to score, then, after two walks and a single, UCLA loaded the bases with two outs. Johnson turned to Chase Shores in the jam, and he got the last out of the eighth inning.

In the bottom of the eighth, Jones sent a single back up the middle with two outs to bring Ethan Frey across the plate. That extended the Tigers’ lead to 9-5.

Shores came back out for the ninth and sat down all three of the batters he faced to shut down the Bruins and end the game.

LSU’s win advances them further along in the winners’ bracket of the College World Series, and they will face the winner of UCLA and Arkansas at 6 p.m. CT on Wednesday.
