SYRACUSE, N.Y. — New York Mets third baseman Mark Vientos began a rehab assignment for Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday night.
Vientos is rehabbing from a strained right hamstring that he sustained while attempting to run out a ground ball on June 3rd against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
In his first rehab start for Syracuse, Vientos served as the DH and went 0-4 with two strikeouts. His best at bat came with one out in the bottom of the sixth, when he smacked a changeup from Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins) lefty Josh Simpson to center field. The line drive was hit 104 mph off of the bat, but was right at the center fielder.
Vientos said postgame that his hamstring felt good in his first game back in action.
“I felt great,” he said. “No issue with the hamstring, felt good to go back out there and compete.”
Vientos said the plan is for him to play third base in Syracuse on Thursday, and make at least two more starts beyond that (one DHing, one at third) before a possible return to New York.
The 25-year old says that he feels like he dodged a bullet with his injury prognosis.
“I was scared,” he said of the initial injury in L.A. “When it happened, I was like, ‘this doesn’t feel good.’ When I got the MRI, I was like ‘wow, what a relief. This isn’t as bad as I thought.'”
Vientos is currently slashing .230/.298/.380 with six HRs and 22 RBIs for the Mets through 208 plate appearances in 53 games.
