Project Epoch, a popular World of Warcraft private server, has ceased all operations following legal pressure from Blizzard Entertainment. The shutdown includes all marketing, distribution, and support related to the server, its client software, and any associated updates. The team confirmed the project will not be relaunched under a different name or management.
The closure is the latest in a long history of Blizzard cracking down on unauthorized world of Warcraft servers. According to a statement released by the Project Epoch team, they will “not be involved with or operate private servers for any Blizzard or Activision games.”
Blizzard has consistently maintained a firm stance against private servers, primarily citing copyright infringement as the core reason. Private servers utilize Blizzard’s copyrighted game client, lore, and in-game assets, which constitutes a violation of their intellectual property rights, nonetheless of whether the server operators profit from the activity. Beyond legal concerns, Blizzard also emphasizes brand and security risks, arguing that unstable or poorly maintained private servers can damage the reputation of World of Warcraft and perhaps expose players to security vulnerabilities.
The fate of Project Epoch mirrors that of numerous othre prominent private servers. Nostalrius, which gained meaningful popularity in 2016, ultimately led to Blizzard’s development of WoW Classic. Other servers, such as Elysium, Light’s Hope, and Turtle WoW, have also faced similar closures, despite their dedicated communities and unique approaches to the game.
