A Virtual World of Friendship: How ‘World of Warcraft’ Gave a Young Man a Fulfilling Life
A new Netflix documentary, The Remarkable Life of Ibelin, sheds light on the incredible story of Mats Steen, a young man from Norway who lived a secret, fulfilling life online through the popular game World of Warcraft. Diagnosed with the rare genetic disorder Duchenne muscular dystrophy, Mats’ mobility declined rapidly, leading to a life confined to a wheelchair. While his family believed he was lonely and isolated, the truth was far more heartwarming.
Discovering a Hidden World
After Mats passed away at the age of 25 in 2014, his family posted an update on his personal blog. To their surprise, they were inundated with emails from people who’d known Mats through his online persona, Ibelin Redmoore. These individuals shared stories of friendship, support, and virtual adventures they’d shared with Mats within the world of World of Warcraft.
“You proved us wrong. You proved us so wrong,” Robert Steen, Mats’ father, says in the trailer, visibly moved by the discovery.
Living a Life Beyond Limitations
Through Ibelin, Mats lived the virtual life of a muscular nobleman and monster slayers, forging meaningful connections and even experiencing virtual dates. This online world offered him a sense of freedom and purpose that his physical limitations had denied him in reality.
“We thought he lived, for many reasons, a wasted life,” Robert confessed in an interview with The Independent. “And then we get these stories sharing just the opposite.” He added, “We strongly believed that he was lonely, that he had no meaning for other people.”
A Lesson for Parents
Robert’s story serves as a poignant reminder for parents to understand the importance of their children’s online lives. He acknowledged, “We did all the right things, and we were so present in our children’s lives. With one exception – and that is the digital part of their lives.”
