Ubisoft Exploring a New Rayman Project
After a decade of silence, Ubisoft is teasing a potential return for Rayman. While details remain scarce, the publisher has confirmed it’s in the early stages of exploring new possibilities for the iconic limbless hero.
A spokesperson for Ubisoft told Kotaku that Ubisoft Montpellier and Ubisoft Milan have initiated an exploration phase for the Rayman brand. Although specifics remain shrouded in mystery, Ubisoft assures fans that more details will be revealed in the future.
This news comes on the heels of reports from Insider Gaming suggesting a Rayman remake codenamed “Project Steambot” is underway. The remake, potentially targeting modern audiences, reportedly involves former members of the Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown team.
Michel Ancel’s Involvement Sparks Controversy
Adding to the intrigue, Insider Gaming reported that Rayman’s creator, Michel Ancel, is consulting on the project. However, his involvement has sparked controversy given his reputation for toxic leadership, which led to criticism from developers within Ubisoft.
Ubisoft clarified that Ancel’s role is focused on ensuring consistency within the Rayman universe. However, they declined to elaborate on the specifics of his involvement or whether it was a request from the studios or a decision imposed by Ubisoft management, including CEO Yves Guillemot, a longtime friend of Ancel’s.
A Long-Awaited Return?
Fans haven’t seen a new Rayman game since 2013’s critically acclaimed Rayman Legends. While a remake wouldn’t be a brand-new entry, it would undoubtedly revive the series for a modern audience.
Recent developments suggest Ubisoft’s commitment to reviving dormant franchises. However, the situation surrounding Michel Ancel’s involvement raises concerns among some fans. Only time will tell how this intriguing project unfolds.
