Weather predictions show a possible weakening of the polar vortexwhich could bring a winter cold storm in the first days of 2024. As a consequence of this phenomenon, cold air masses could increase in the Peninsula in the first fifteen days of January.
The polar vortex is a circulation pattern that occurs in the stratosphere, where a low pressure area is created with cold air confined in polar areas that rotates in the same direction. The models predict a weakening of this pattern, which would reverse the air flow starting in the last week of December and the cold air could overflow the polar zone, reaching Spain.
But in the meantime, this week starts with maximum temperatures increasing in the eastern half of the peninsula, which will be “more pronounced” in the upper Ebro y Gironaand with few changes or a slight decrease in the rest.
According to the prediction of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), The minimums will decrease in La Mancha and western Andalusia, “without major changes” in the rest of the territory.
