Three in four Americans – and 50% of Republicans – support Congress extending tax credits for low and moderate income individuals to afford individual coverage under the Affordable Care Act, according to a new KFF poll.
These tax credits, or subsidies, lower health insurance premiums for individuals. The Biden administration and the Democratic-controlled Congress enhanced them in 2021, enabling more Americans to purchase coverage. These enhanced subsidies, set to expire at year-end, helped ACA individual coverage, also known as Obamacare, enrollment surpass a record 24 million Americans, driving its popularity to all-time highs.
However, legislation to extend these tax credits remains stalled in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. Disagreement over extending the tax credits triggered the current federal government shutdown, as President Donald trump and Congressional Republicans failed to reach an agreement with Democrats regarding the future of the enhanced subsidies. This shutdown is now the longest in U.S. history.
