Ben Cousins Faces Multiple Surgeries After Health Scares
West Coast Eagles legend Ben Cousins has recently undergone both hernia and knee surgery, sidelining him from planned appearances and highlighting a period of health challenges for the AFL icon.
Recent Health Battles
Cousins, 46, recently revealed details of a health scare that required a hernia operation. He initially noticed a lump a couple of months ago but delayed seeking medical attention, hoping to get through the football season as reported by Yahoo News Australia. The pain became acute after attending State of Origin Game 2 in Perth, ultimately necessitating surgery.
“I’m a little tender actually. I went in for a hernia op on Friday – not much fun,” Cousins told Triple M. “I had a little bubble or lump pop up where it probably shouldn’t a couple of months ago, and I’ve been in denial, if you like.”
Knee Surgery Sidelines Cousins
Complications arose as Cousins prepared for the EJ Whitten Legends Game. While stepping up his training, he injured his knee, requiring further surgical intervention. This forced him to withdraw from the highly anticipated event according to 7News.
“I stepped up my training in preparation, and unfortunately, I’ve done myself a mischief,” he said on Mix94.5’s Pete & Kymba with Ben Cousins. “Disappointed, but, yeah, I’ve hurt my knee.”
Previous Health Concerns and Recovery
Cousins noted that this is the first time he has required knee surgery despite playing 270 AFL games. He had been avoiding running due to the hernia, and the rapid increase in training intensity likely contributed to the injury PerthNow reported.
He underwent the knee surgery and posted on Instagram, expressing his disappointment at missing the Legends game and wishing those involved the best.
Looking Ahead
While facing a recovery period, Cousins remains involved in the AFL community through his commentary role with Channel Seven. His recent health challenges underscore the physical demands placed on athletes, even after retirement.
