AI Commerce Takes Hold in small Purchases: Worldpay Data

Worldpay has discovered that agentic commerce is poised to become popular for smaller, routine purchases.

A recent survey of American consumers revealed they’re most comfortable using artificial intelligence (AI) for everyday expenses under $50. This includes items like cinema tickets, meal delivery or pickup, health and beauty products, meal vouchers, gift cards, and subscriptions, according to a press release emailed to PYMNTS on Wednesday (Nov. 5).

When it comes to personal or big-ticket items, consumers still prefer to browse themselves, Worldpay found. they’re less likely to use agentic commerce for categories like travel, concert tickets, clothing, and home decor.

In total, 44% of all Americans, and 59% of those between 18 and 34, are open to using AI for purchases, the study shows. This suggests a strong potential for growth as younger generations become increasingly comfortable with AI-powered shopping.

“These findings demonstrate that consumers are willing to embrace agentic commerce for certain purchases, notably those that are low-risk and frequently made,” said Worldpay in the release. “Businesses should consider how they can integrate AI into their payment processes to cater to this growing demand.”

The rise of agentic commerce presents opportunities for businesses to streamline the purchasing process and offer a more personalized shopping experience. However, building trust and ensuring clarity will be crucial for widespread adoption.
