AHL Suspensions: Blackhawks, Kraken Prospects Face 20-Game Bans
Rockford IceHogs goaltender Stanislav Berezhnoy and Coachella Valley Firebirds forward David Goyette have each been handed 20-game suspensions by the American Hockey League (AHL) for violating the terms of the AHL/PHPA Performance Enhancing Substance Program. The suspensions, announced earlier this week, will sideline two promising NHL prospects during a crucial part of the season.
Details of the Suspensions
Berezhnoy, a prospect with the Chicago Blackhawks, has already served one game of his suspension and is eligible to return to the IceHogs lineup on April 11th. AHL Communications confirmed the details. Goyette, a forward belonging to the Seattle Kraken, will be eligible to return on April 10th. Pro Hockey Rumors reported that both players will be ineligible for recall to the NHL during their suspensions.
Player Backgrounds
Stanislav Berezhnoy (Blackhawks Prospect)
The 22-year-old Berezhnoy signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Blackhawks last summer, marking his first season playing in North America. He has a 5-9-1 record with a 3.18 goals-against average and a .888 save percentage in 15 games with the IceHogs, primarily serving as a backup to Drew Commesso. Daily Faceoff noted that Berezhnoy received a brief recall to the NHL in January but did not see any game action.
David Goyette (Kraken Prospect)
Goyette, 21, was drafted by the Kraken in the second round (61st overall) in 2022. While a prolific scorer in junior hockey – amassing 282 points in 197 OHL games – he has yet to replicate that success in the professional ranks. He has 10 points in 47 appearances for the Firebirds this season, following an 18-point campaign in 54 games last season. Pro Hockey Rumors highlighted his struggles to translate his junior success to the AHL.
Impact and Return to Play
Both players are expected to return to their respective teams before the end of the AHL season, with just over a week remaining after their suspensions conclude. Though, their extended absence could pose a challenge if their teams are contending for a playoff spot, as reintegrating them into the lineup after a lengthy ban could be risky.
