AI Chatbots and Weight Loss: A Cautionary Tale for Teens
AI-powered chatbots are increasingly popular tools for information and assistance, but a recent study reveals they may not be reliable sources for weight loss advice, particularly for adolescents. Researchers found that meal plans generated by popular AI chatbots for overweight and obese teens were often nutritionally unbalanced, potentially posing risks to healthy development.
The Study: How AI Nutrition Advice Fell Short
A study published in Frontiers in Nutrition assessed three-day meal plans created by five widely used chatbots – ChatGPT-4o, Gemini 2.5 Pro, Claude 4.1, Bing Chat-5GPT, and Perplexity. The prompts, translated from Turkish, were designed for four hypothetical 15-year-olds (two overweight, two obese, with both male and female representation). These AI-generated plans were then compared to dietitian-designed meal plans for each teen.
The findings were consistent across the different chatbots: the AI-generated plans generally contained lower amounts of carbohydrates and higher amounts of protein and fat than recommended for growing teenagers. On average, the AI plans were approximately 695 calories per day below those created by registered dietitians.
Why Unbalanced Nutrition is Risky for Teens
Adolescence is a crucial period for growth, bone development, and brain development. Restrictive or unbalanced diets can interfere with these essential processes. Even if the AI tools provided more accurate nutritional information, experts caution against teens using them for unsupervised weight loss.
“Young people should not be undertaking any sort of restrictive eating, unless it’s in a supervised way with health professionals,” says Stephanie Partridge, a public health and nutrition researcher at the University of Sydney. A registered dietitian considers individual factors like health conditions, socioeconomic status, and family dynamics when creating a plan, something an AI tool cannot do.
The Risk of Disordered Eating
Beyond nutritional deficiencies, restrictive diets generated by AI chatbots can increase the risk of developing disordered eating patterns. Weight loss attempts, especially among teens, are inherently risky, and relying on a non-specialized tool can exacerbate those risks.
Are Teens Using AI for Diet Advice?
According to the Pew Research Center, 64% of U.S. Teens report using AI chatbots. While the primary uses are information searching and schoolwork, there’s growing evidence that teens are turning to AI for health and diet information. Some patients of registered dietitian Stephanie Kile have reported using chatbots and prioritizing the AI’s advice over her professional guidance.
The Need for Caution and Further Research
While the study’s prompts weren’t written by teens, limiting conclusions about real-world AI interactions, researchers emphasize the need for more investigation. Future research should focus on how people actually use AI-generated diet plans and whether these tools influence eating behaviors.
It’s important to remember that AI chatbots are not a substitute for professional medical or nutritional advice. Teens seeking guidance on weight management should consult with a qualified healthcare provider or registered dietitian.
