Flu Season Arrives in Alabama, but State Officials Say It’s a Low-Level Outbreak

Officials at the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) have confirmed the arrival of flu season across the state, though they emphasize it’s currently a low-level outbreak.

State Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris shared this information with the State Committee of Public Health on Thursday. He noted that the number of emergency room visits by patients with flu-like symptoms has crossed the 3% threshold, officially marking the beginning of a flu outbreak.

North Alabama and Jefferson County Seeing Most Illness

Dr. Harris reported that north Alabama and Jefferson County are experiencing the highest concentration of flu-related illnesses at present. However, he anticipates this pattern to shift as flu season progresses.

Normal Flu Activity Expected

“Overall, the state as a whole, we’ve reached that threshold,” Dr. Harris stated. “So, it’s coming this way, like it does every year.” He predicts this flu season will resemble a typical year, in contrast to the previous two years, where flu cases were notably lower due to COVID-19 pandemic precautions.

Comparing to Last Year and National Trends

Dr. Harris pointed out that last year, Alabama saw a high-level flu outbreak, with flu-like illnesses accounting for 6.5% of ER visits. Remarkably, this year’s flu activity aligns with what is observed in most other states, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Key Recommendations for Flu Prevention

Dr. Harris strongly encourages residents to get their updated influenza vaccination, which is now approved for everyone six months and older. He also stresses the importance of staying home when sick to prevent the spread of influenza, especially to vulnerable populations such as older adults, pregnant women, and young children.
