Alberta Towns Prepare for Wildfire Season, Learning from Jasper’s Devastation
Despite lingering spring snow, Alberta is officially in wildfire season, prompting communities to proactively prepare for potential threats. The Rocky Mountain towns of Canmore and Hinton are bolstering their defenses, drawing lessons from the 2024 Jasper wildfires that displaced 25,000 residents and destroyed a third of the town’s structures.
Canmore’s Multi-Phase Fireguard Project
Canmore Mayor Sean Krausert emphasized the importance of preparedness, stating the Jasper fire served as a stark reminder of wildfire’s potential devastation. The town is undertaking a multi-phase project to construct a fireguard – a cleared strip of land designed to halt the spread of wildfires by removing fuel sources – around the community. CBC News
The first phase focused on south-facing mountain slopes, which are particularly susceptible to drying and ignition. A second phase is currently underway, with trees being cleared on a ridge overlooking Canmore, creating piles of debris slated for burning during the winter. A third project will establish a 150-meter wide firebreak extending 15 kilometers south down the valley.
“I think all of us who live in the valley as we go through wildfire season have some low grade anxiety,” Krausert said.
FireSmart Initiatives in Canmore
In addition to the fireguard, Canmore is actively promoting the FireSmart program to homeowners. This initiative encourages residents to take preventative measures, such as clearing pine needles from gutters and removing debris from roofs. Simon Bagshaw, Canmore’s FireSmart coordinator, highlighted the danger of ember showers, which can travel up to two kilometers ahead of a wildfire and ignite combustible materials like woodpiles and mulch. Hinton Builds a Five-Kilometer Firebreak
Hinton, located an hour east of Jasper, is constructing a five-kilometer firebreak around the town following the Jasper fire and a 2023 fire in Edson that prompted evacuations. Mayor Brian Laberge acknowledged the challenges of removing trees, particularly on private land. “Landowners are going, ‘what the heck, I love my trees,”’ he said. CBC News
Climate Change and Wildfire Risk
Wildfire expert Jed Kaplan of the University of Calgary emphasized that hotter summers, prolonged dry periods, and warmer winters – all consequences of climate change – are increasing the constant risk of wildfires. He believes that proactive interventions in mountain towns between Calgary and Vancouver can significantly reduce potential damage. CBC News
Provincial Efforts and Human-Caused Fires
Alberta Forestry Minister Todd Loewen reported that crews have already responded to 27 new wildfires this year. He stressed the importance of public awareness, noting that an estimated 60% of wildfires are caused by human activity, even as the remainder are attributed to lightning. CBC News
“Even small changes in behaviour can make a big difference,” Loewen said.
