Sevilla Parts Ways with Matías Almeyda Following Poor LaLiga Form
Sevilla FC has relieved Matías Almeyda of his duties as head coach, the club announced on Monday, March 23, 2026. The decision comes after a disappointing 2-0 home loss to Valencia on Saturday, leaving Sevilla just three points above the LaLiga relegation zone.
Almeyda’s Tenure and Recent Struggles
Almeyda, appointed last June, managed Sevilla in 32 matches across all competitions, achieving 10 victories, 7 draws, and 15 losses. However, recent form has been particularly concerning, with only one win in their last eight LaLiga games – a 1-0 victory at Getafe last month. The team currently sits in 15th place in the league standings after 29 matches.
A Disappointing Record
According to club statistics, Almeyda’s losing percentage of 48.28% places him among the Sevilla managers with the worst records in LaLiga history. Only Juan Carlos Álvarez (53.85%) and Ferdinand Daucik (50%) have a higher percentage of defeats while managing the club in the Spanish top flight. His record is equal to that of Sabino Barinaga.
Suspension and Final Remarks
Almeyda was serving the fifth game of a seven-game suspension on Saturday, stemming from an argument with match officials during a 1-1 draw against Alaves in February. Following the defeat to Valencia, Almeyda expressed his disappointment with the team’s lack of fight and clarity, stating, “I consider in the last two games we saw a team with little struggle, something that was giving us results, such as self-love and dedication, and there is a lot of fear of making mistakes.”
Looking Ahead
Sevilla’s next match is scheduled for April 5th against Oviedo, currently in last place in LaLiga. The club will be seeking a swift turnaround in form and a fresh manager to guide them away from the threat of relegation.
