Alternative Eurovision Song Contest in Brussels Protests Israel’s Participation

Brussels will host an alternative song contest on May 12, 2026, as a demonstration of solidarity with Palestine and a protest against Israel’s participation in the official Eurovision Song Contest. The event, titled “United for Palestine,” will feature performances by Belgian artists with Eurovision experience, including Gustaph and Geike Arnaert.

Solidarity and Protest

The alternative contest is organized by several Belgian organizations who oppose what they describe as giving a platform to “genocide and warmongering.” Katrien De Ruysscher, speaking on behalf of the organizers, stated that if the official Eurovision Song Contest does not take a firm stance, they will create their own stage. The event aims to unite individuals who believe culture and human rights are intrinsically linked.

Featured Artists

Gustaph, who represented Belgium in the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Because of You,” achieving a 7th-place finish, will perform. Geike Arnaert, known as the lead singer of Hooverphonic, which represented Belgium in the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest, will also take the stage. Walter Verdin, who participated in 1983 with Pas de Deux, is also confirmed to perform.

Broader Context of Protest

Israel’s participation in the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest has sparked controversy, with Spain, Ireland, Iceland, the Netherlands, and Slovenia withdrawing in protest against the Israeli army’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank. Despite these withdrawals, Belgium’s Francophone broadcaster RTBF confirmed the country’s participation. Whereas the Flemish broadcaster VRT will broadcast the contest, it will provide commentary from Brussels instead of sending a commentator to Vienna.

Event Details

“United for Palestine” will be held at La Madeleine in Brussels on May 12, 2026, and will include music, testimonials, and performances by artists advocating for human rights.
