Álvaro de la Calle evolves well from Ceret’s serious goring

Álvaro de la Calle, seriously injured in the bullfight this Sunday in Ceret (south of France), is evolving favorably from the three-way goring inflicted on him by a José Escolar bull and throughout the day he will be discharged from the Clínica du Vallespir from this French city to be able to return to his native Salamanca, where he will continue his recovery.

De la Calle underwent surgery upon his arrival at the hospital for an “extensive” goring, with three trajectories, but “miraculously clean”, without affecting important vessels, sources close to the right-handed veteran from Salamanca have told Efe.

The mishap happened when he was going in to kill the very complicated José Escolar bull that opened yesterday’s bullfight in Ceret, which accurately caught him by the thigh. He was quickly transferred to the infirmary, where he was stabilized, and was later referred to the Vallespir clinic and not to the Perpignan hospital, as initially reported.

The name of Álvaro de la Calle (Salamanca, 1974) resonated with force after his meritorious and notable performance during the bullfight on Palm Sunday last year in Las Ventas, when, acting as an outstanding player, he had to take charge of five bulls after the serious mishap of Emilio de Justo, who that day was announced as the only sword.

An afternoon that earned him recognition from fans and professionals, not from Spanish companies, since only Ceret decided to reward such an important performance by hiring him as the first sword for his fair. But neither Madrid nor any other national square has deigned to remember him.
