Ruben Amorim has been officially appointed as Manchester United’s new head coach, taking the reins on November 11th.

Erik ten Hag’s tenure came to an abrupt end on Monday, following a unanimous decision by the Old Trafford hierarchy. Sunday’s disappointing loss at West Ham, coupled with a sluggish start to the season, proved to be the final straw.

Manchester United swiftly turned their attention to highly-rated Sporting Lisbon coach Amorim, and have now confirmed the deal. Amorim will manage the Red Devils until June 2027, with an option for an additional year.

The 39-year-old Portuguese tactician will begin his duties with Manchester United on November 6th, after overseeing Sporting’s remaining three matches before the international break.

Amorim’s impressive track record speaks for itself. During his first full season at Sporting in 2020/21, he guided the club to their first Primeira Liga title in 19 years. He repeated this feat last season, solidifying Sporting’s dominance in Portuguese football.

His trophy cabinet isn’t limited to league titles. Amorim also secured League Cup victories during his time at Sporting, and previously enjoyed success with Braga in the 2019/20 season.

Manchester United sources emphasize that Amorim was their top choice, highlighting his impressive credentials and alignment with the club’s evolving football philosophy.

United’s swift action saw a delegation travel to Lisbon on Monday to negotiate with Sporting. Aware of Amorim’s €10m release clause and 30-day notice period, the club successfully negotiated a favorable agreement.

Amorim’s coaching staff will be announced in due course. His debut match will be a Premier League encounter against Ipswich on November 24th.

Amorim becomes Manchester United’s second Portuguese manager, following in the footsteps of Jose Mourinho, who led the club from 2016 to 2018.
