Blake Fielder-Civil Reflects on Relationship with Amy Winehouse and Her Death
Blake Fielder-Civil, the ex-husband of the late Amy Winehouse, has recently spoken about their tumultuous relationship and the circumstances surrounding her death, addressing long-held public perceptions of his role in her struggles. The couple was married from 2007 to 2009, a period marked by intense media scrutiny and personal battles with addiction.
Acknowledging Responsibility, But Challenging Blame
Fielder-Civil, 43, addressed the widespread belief that he was primarily responsible for Winehouse’s descent into drug addiction and her untimely death at age 27. “I understand a lot of people, especially people reading media 20 years ago, would have an idea that Amy’s passing is my responsibility,” he said on the March 17 episode of the We Necessitate to Talk podcast People. While acknowledging his part, he firmly stated, “If I’ve done something, I’ll put my hand up to it.” He emphasized that Winehouse was a strong-willed individual who made her own choices.
“Amy herself had agency,” Fielder-Civil continued. “And that is in no way at all disrespecting her by saying that, but Amy did what she wanted to do. And even though the drinking had started to hurt her, she carried on.” He clarified that Winehouse had begun experimenting with cocaine before their relationship, and while he admitted to introducing her to heroin, he rejected the notion that he forced her into drug utilize. We became addicts together.” He similarly noted that Winehouse’s addiction was already developing when he was incarcerated for a pub fight, suggesting that his absence didn’t halt her substance use.
