Tesco Store Plans for Dungarvan Rejected
An Bord Pleanála has dealt a blow to Tesco’s expansion plans in Waterford, refusing planning permission for a new store in Dungarvan.
The decision overturns an earlier approval granted by Waterford City and County Council. The original application proposed a comprehensive development, encompassing retail sales, office space, storage facilities, a café, and a 165-space car park.
The proposed site for the new store was the Former Glanbia Site on Richard A. Walsh Street. However, the plans faced opposition from Hollybush Properties Unlimited (believed to be associated with a major supermarket chain operating in Dungarvan) and the ICAV Property Fund, who lodged an appeal against the development.
This rejection leaves Dungarvan as the only large urban area in Waterford County without a Tesco store. Currently, five Tesco outlets serve Waterford City and Tramore. The supermarket chain also maintains its Irish Customer Contact Centre in Butlerstown, Waterford City.

This development will likely spark further debate about retail competition and the future of Dungarvan’s retail landscape.
